I’ve known Stephan for many years, and it’s been a privilege to review his Simpson Desert Travel Guide. It is an exceptional piece of work.
From the first page to the last, Stephan’s depth of knowledge and hands-on experience is unmistakable—few could match the number of kilometres he has travelled across the Simpson.
The guide goes well beyond outlining a range of 4WD routes across the desert. It also explores both European and pre-European history, adding valuable context to the journey. A substantial portion is dedicated to practical advice, offering detailed guidance on vehicle set-ups for both seasoned and first-time travellers. It also covers essential topics such as vehicle preparation, camping equipment, permits, safety gear, and emergency considerations.
Without question, this is the most comprehensive Simpson Desert guide I have encountered, and I highly recommend it. The insights on vehicle preparation and equipment selection are equally relevant to other remote 4WD adventures, including the Canning Stock Route and Cape York.

I have had the pleasure of knowing and travelling with Stephan for over ten years, more often than not in the most remote and unexplored locations across Australia. A shared passion for true remote travel in a no-fuss manner drew us together from the very beginning. A philosophy of having well prepared and capable vehicles, thorough knowledge of recovery and driving techniques (we were both in fact 4x4 instructors at the time of meeting) combined with a deep respect of this beautiful land and nature saw us depart on many incredible trips together.

I would describe it as 'holistic' travel. Stopping to take in the myriad of little experiences and wildlife along the way; the 4x4 simply being a singular part (or tool) of a comprehensive kit allowing us to have enjoyable and safe adventures. Stephan has in a relatively short timeframe experienced many more trips than I have managed to accumulate in my entire lifetime of Australian travel. It is truly impressive and shows his genuine dedication and passion for remote adventures. He has truly become one of the most regarded and experienced 4x4 tourers in this country.

In this guide, Stephan has managed to capture that wealth of knowledge and express it in a beautiful way that will set you up for success on your adventures into what I believe is one of the most rewarding places in Australia; the Simpson Desert. Be it a novice or a seasoned traveller, there is something for everyone in this comprehensive guide.

I am so grateful for Stephan and his contributions to offroad touring, exploration, history and holistic travel. I wish him (and you) safe travels.

Is this the best Simpson Desert guide ever?

Stephan from Alloffroad has put together a must have guide on the Simpson Desert. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced desert traveller you’ll find something in this guide to make your travels in this remote area into an experience to remember.

If you want history it’s in there, if you want planning and what you should do prior to your trip, it’s in there. If it’s tips about desert travel, guess what, it’s all there and Stephan uses his experience from multiple trips over many years to provide answers to all your questions.

Much of the content provided is equally useful in any remote area travel and Stephan's insight into what the Simpson Desert is all about is right on the money. As much a modern day adventurer as many in the past, instead of travelling on foot or even a camel or two, he uses a 4WD to share his passion for the great outdoors and shares his knowledge with fellow travellers.

Do yourself a favour and don’t leave home without it!

Brenden Blackford - Rural QLD police Officer

A more descriptive sub heading.

As a police officer stationed in outback Queensland I would highly recommend travellers read and understand the contents of Stefans book. Few people have the experience, passion and knowledge about not only crossing but enjoying and having a bucket list experience in the Simpson desert and by extension other desert areas around the country. Having a plan when it’s going good but also if it all goes bad is important to avoid mistakes under duress. Stefan covers these areas to ensure you are prepared to go and have the trip of a lifetime.
