About Stephan Fischer
I'm a German-Australian adventurer, accredited 4WD trainer, and remote travel specialist. I immigrated to Australia in 1997 after travelling to more than 50 countries, and I've spent the three decades since covering approximately 500,000 km across this continent — with a deep focus on its arid interior.
My work as a desert adviser, trainer, and content creator comes down to one principle: safe, self-reliant travel in genuinely remote country.
I've completed more than 20 major desert expeditions — unsupported crossings through the Gibson, Tanami, and Simpson Deserts that demanded full vehicle and personal self-sufficiency. My field experience runs from coastal sand and island environments like Fraser Island and Tasmania, through to long, trackless crossings far from any services.
The guide started as field notes — things I kept learning, crossing after crossing, that nobody had written down properly. After my third Simpson Desert crossing, I sat down and turned those notes into the book I'd wished existed on my first attempt.
I've slept at −9°C in the Simpson with the wrong sleeping bag, shivering until sunrise in three layers. I've watched experienced travellers make decisions in the field that nearly cost them everything — not through recklessness, but through a gap in honest, practical information. I've crossed with my kids. I know what the desert demands from a family as much as from a solo driver.
That gap is what this guide fills. Everything in it is field-tested. Nothing is theoretical.

Four-Wheel Driving Expertise
As an accredited 4WD driver trainer and assessor, I've worked with commercial operators, 4WD clubs, and the NSW 4WD Association across a wide range of vehicles, setups, and driving styles.
My track record includes some of Australia's most technically demanding routes: Daniel Point Road, Gees Arm South, Mount Airlie, 6th Stage, Mt Walker, Billy Goat Bluff, Butcher Country Track, Hern Spur, Caledonia River Track, and Mt Huxley, among others.

I've served as Vice President of Responsible Technical 4WD Club NSW and am a member of the Australian 4WD Association. For over a decade I've run the ALLOFFROAD YouTube channel, producing desert travel guides, sand-driving tutorials, and 4WD training content reaching millions of viewers.
In 2025, I won a landmark defamation case brought against me by battery manufacturer Deep Cycle Systems after I published critical performance findings from three years of independent testing. I say what I find — whether that's convenient or not. The guide is written to the same standard.

Before settling in Australia, I travelled to more than 50 countries. I'm a martial artist and instructor of over 25 years — that discipline shapes how I approach risk in the field: methodically, not recklessly.
I regularly travel with my two children, who've been crossing deserts with me from a young age. Planning a serious remote trip with kids is a different challenge entirely — and it's one I cover from direct experience.
Family desert travel is covered in the guide →Current Focus
I spend around 100 days per year in the field, continuously refining vehicle setups, navigation systems, and training methods. I'm highly tech-savvy and integrate modern navigation tools, communications equipment, and recovery technology into every trip — always prioritising reliability over novelty.
Through guiding, advising, and publishing, my ongoing work helps others approach desert and remote travel with the preparation and confidence it demands.
